Adult Basic Education & Training (ABET)

In society, there are many adults that can’t read or write and it is important for companies as part of their social responsibility to identify and open the door to learning for these employees.  We are able to assess, identify and train your employees in Literacy, Numeracy and general communication.

LITERACY, NUMERACY & COMMUNICATION

Course levels

Employees need to be assessed prior to commencement of ABET, to assist at which level the learner will fit into the programme.

·         Levels as per the Independent Examination Board (IEB)

-      Pre-Abet (Breakthrough Literacy) - This is for learners who can neither read nor write.

-      Pre-ABET (Numeracy) - This is for learners who cannot perform basic calculations.

-      Level 1 - Elementary English reading, writing and verbal communication skills.

-      Level 2 - Reading, writing, verbal communication and basic mathematics.

-      Level 3 - Increased reading, writing, verbal communication and mathematical skills.

-   Level 4 - Advanced reading, writing, verbal communication and mathematical skills.

ABET level 4 is equivalent to NQF Level 1 or Grade 9

OBJECTIVE:

To teach English literacy, Numeracy, Communication and Mathematical skills to enrich the lives of previous disadvantaged employees for further up-skilling in the workplace.

OUTCOME:

Literate, dedicated and motivated employees.

It is optional to either have Numeracy and Literacy as separate courses, or to run the courses concurrently for your employees

COURSE DURATION:

Up to 10 months per level (dependent on learner’s aptitude and dedication to the learning process)

ASSESSMENT COSTS, TRAINING MATERIAL, EXAMINATION FEES, ETC:

A quote will be provided on request.

TRAINING MATERIAL:

The company is required to purchase all required learning material for the learners.

EXAMINATIONS:

Those learners who have made the required progress at the time of the examinations, usually during June and November of each year, will be registered for the examinations.  If a learner shows exceptional aptitude the ABET Facilitator will apply to have the learner write a special examination and be certified in order to move to the next level sooner.  Each level is certified by the IEB.

PREREQUISITES:

In order to enable and facilitate communication between yourselves and the Independent Examination board (IEB) including examinations, if your company wishes to do training on site, you are required to register a learning centre on your premises.  Unlock the Potential provides a service to facilitate this process.

TIME ALLOCATION:

As training is conducted on a weekly basis and in order to maximize results the minimum time to be allocated should be 6 hours per week (2 hours, 3 days a week).  The company sacrifices 1 hour paid time and the employee’s sacrifices 1 hour of their own time per day – 3pm to 5pm class timeslots advisable.  Other arrangements may be as suitable for the employee and company.
